About THE HALL

Columbus Hall is situated on the northwest corner of what was known as the Berczy Block. The Block was patented by Andrew Borland and named for Charles Berczy, the third postmaster of Toronto and son of Prussian painter and surveyor William Berczy (d. 1813). The Block Street Albert, Eugenia, Anna Eliza (now Codrington), Amelia, and Theresa are named after Charles’ children. The Block was owned by a series of locally prominent owners, including W.D. Ardagh, J and M Duffy, and A. Gunn. Jonathan Henderson, a local merchant, and owner of a hardware store on Dunlop Street, purchased the lots in 1877.

He commenced construction of Bellview, which is listed in an 1891 Northern Advance news article to be among the Grand Homes of Barrie. The house and property were purchased by the Knights of Columbus in May 1962. The building was renovated with a 30-foot by 50-foot hall addition in 1991.

Erected by the Knights of Columbus, Barrie Council 1626 in commemoration of their 100th anniversary in 2012.
